A hair nightmare can wreck our day. But sometimes, hair can go wrong at the hardest of times, which has a knock on affect to our relationships, assurance, even our professional lives. For some people, the trouble can spiral to such an extent, they struggle to retrieve their self respect.

Steven, who is a 19 year old history scholar, shares his experience: 'Emma had agreed to go on a date with me. I'd had a crush on her for five years. I spent a lot on a new suit, and made sure everything was perfect. I went for a haircut the morning of the big date. Rather than a trim, the hair dresser took several inches away. When I walked from the hair salon I looked like an army recruit, but with none of his self-assurance. I felt like a dupe and called off the date with Emma. I didn't leave the home for three months. I was depressed, I felt like my life had ended. I ended up going to the doctors for antidepressant drugs to help me get well.'

Hair can go wrong for many reasons, and have a destructive effect. Help spare yourself pain and embarrassment by observing these tips when you visit the hairdressers:

- Take a picture of what style you require. Online, you can do this using a snap of yourself. This makes it easier for the hairdresser to picture, than one on a professional model

- Ask the hairstylist to repeat your directions back to you. This gives you the opportunity to correct any misinterpretations.

- Stop! Is not a dirty word. If you feel the hairdresser is losing control, ask them to take a break and speak to their supervisor.

- Book an appointment for the middle, rather than the beginning or close of the day, to catch hairdressers at their best. A stylist battling sleep deprivation is a severe risk to your haircut!
